Rhinoplasty – Does the nose aesthetic surgery leave scars?

There are practically no apparent scars in rhinoplasty surgery. That is because the incisions are made inside the nose, and therefore leave hidden traces. In special cases, when the alar rims are treated, there are two small scars on the sulci between the rims and the face that can hardly be noticed after a few weeks.

In other cases, a hidden scar is positioned on the columella (lower part of the nose) when the surgeon decides for an open rhinoplasty.

Will I be able to choose the shape I want for my new nose?

There is an aesthetic balance between the nose and the face, one that the plastic surgeon must respect in order to preserve the natural and authentic appearance of the face. It is possible to explain to Dr. Alexandre what are your concerns, many of them can be addressed but it is not possible to completely change someone’s nose shape.

Each individual case is carefully analyzed to grant the best shape possible to the nose, within the requirements of the specific face.

What type of anesthesia is used for the plastic surgery?

The preference is for general anesthesia, since it brings greater comfort to the patient and the plastic surgeon.

Before and after nose plastic surgery – Is the outcome immediate?

No!

There are several post-op phases for the nose. Thus, in a 1^st phase, despite having corrected several aesthetic defects of the original nose, we notice some swelling, which reduces as the days go by and tends to disappear completely after around the 6^th month.

There are patients that reach the definitive result a little sooner, as well as others that rarely exceed this period. The persistence of the transitional swelling, or lack thereof, for a longer period than usual generally doesn’t interfere in the end result.

How long does the Rhinoplasty take?

It varies a lot. From 2 to 4 hours, depending on the complexity of the case.

How long is the hospital stay?

24 hours.

Are dressings used in the surgery? How many?

When the surgery is over, the nose is maintained immobilized with a cast that completely covers the nose. This cast stays in place for 7 to 14 days and is removed at the doctor’s office. Nasal packing may or may not be used (with vaseline gauzes), which is left in place for 48 hours.

The cast is important for the 1^st nose-remodeling phase. There is also a dressing made of Micropore under the cast, which stays in place for 14 days.

I heard the nose bleeds in the first few days. Is this true?

There is a slight bleeding through the gauze packing, which is normal in the first 48 hours and shouldn’t be a reason for concern. A dressing just under the nostrils is maintained on purpose to absorb this bleeding. This additional dressing may be changed at home as many times as necessary.

Is there post-op pain?

Usually no. Nose aesthetic surgery has a painless post-op. When there is pain, it is easily managed with pain killers that will be prescribed as a preventive measure.

When there is pain, it usually happens when the dressings are changed, the cast is removed or in the removal of the nasal packing.

How will my breathing be after the rhinoplasty?

Aesthetic rhinoplasty also aims at improving the patient’s respiratory conditions, when they are altered.

The respiratory-valve movement is also hindered during this period, since the alar rim elasticity is altered. As time goes by, this goes back to normal.

Respiratory problems usually are not related to the septum; this will be corrected in the same surgery, if needed.

The simultaneous correction of the septum and the turbinates requires special cares. In these cases, aesthetic surgery must be performed in a second surgery, after the first correction done by the ENT.

How is the post-op evolution?

The patient must not forget that until the desired result is achieved, several evolution phases are characteristic to this type of plastic surgery. The swelling, stains and breathing difficulties in the first few days are common to all patient. Be patient.

Don’t forget that nose aesthetic surgery outcome should be assessed only after the 12^th post-op month.

For how long does the outcome obtained persist?

It’s practically definitive. We should just point out that after the 50^th year of life, any nose will start presenting morphological alterations due to the transformation of the quality of skin that covers it.
